WHO ARE WE?
Mohau Equity Partners (“MEP”) was founded in 2017 by Dr Penny Moumakwa and her long-standing business partners with the vision of creating a progressive 100% black women-owned investment holding company that will become a leading financial services company in South Africa. They operate primarily in broad private equity and the development capital market, and their primary objective is to invest in businesses that are relevant to job creation and human capital development.
In terms of the amended Financial Services Charter as per the BBBEE DTI Codes, MEP is progressive and complies with required codes to be a Black Business Growth Funding initiative. The company is domiciled in South Africa but has an investment mandate for South African Development Community (SADC) regions and certain Sub-Saharan African countries.
It is a partnership between a group of highly experienced black businesswomen and a select group of capital partners including RMB Ventures and Discovery Ltd, who are founding partners and principal investors.
The emphasis is on impact investing with a transformation and innovation focus – MEP look to invest in high growth businesses but remain selective and discerning when evaluating possible investment opportunities. In terms of scale, they prefer businesses that generate EBIT of R 10 million plus and their portfolio strategy is to balance risk with later-stage investments that generate substantial free cash flows with consistent dividend payments. They target businesses that have strong entrepreneurial management, founders that are still active in their businesses, strong black economic empowerment credentials and transformation leadership.
